Multiple Modernities
by Shmuel N. Eisenstadt
Published on 2017-09-29 by Routledge

How may we characterize contemporary society in a world so complex? Can looking at the diverse paths followed by various cultures in the modern world generate useful new social scientific typologies, or must a different set of questions be posed in this era of globalization? What, in short, is the nature of modernity? These are some of the questions addressed by the contributors to Multiple Modernities.Following the theme in an earlier work edited by Shmuel Eisenstadt, Public Spheres and Collective Identities, this book challenges conventional notions of how the world has changed politically, socially, and economically. The authors consider the meaning of modernity in contexts as different as communist Russia, modern India, the Muslim world, Latin America, China and East Asia, and the United States. Miscegenation, transnational migration, technological developments, and changing communications have shifted the ground on which theories of society were once built; political system, diaspora groups, religion, and ||classical|| theories of modernity have to be reconsidered in a new context.Authors and chapters include: S.N. Eisenstadt, ||Multiple Modernities||; Bjrn Wittrock, ||Modernity: One, None, or Many? European Origins and Modernity as a Global Condition||; Johann P. Arnason, ||Communism and Modernity||; Nilfer Gle, ||Snapshots of Islamic Modernities||; Dale F. Philosophical Perspectives on Ruins, Monuments, and Memorials by Jeanette Bicknell,Jennifer Judkins,Carolyn Korsmeyer Published on 2019-08-05 by Routledge This collection of newly published essays examines our relationship to physical objects that invoke, commemorate, and honor the past. The recent destruction of cultural heritage in war and controversies over Civil War monuments in the US have foregrounded the importance of artifacts that embody history. The book invites us to ask: How do memorials convey their meanings? What is our responsibility for the preservation or reconstruction of historically significant structures? How should we respond when the public display of a monument divides a community? This anthology includes coverage of the destruction of Palmyra and the Bamiyan Buddhas, the loss of cultural heritage through war and natural disasters, the explosive controversies surrounding Confederate-era monuments, and the decay of industry in the U.S. Rust Belt. The authors con...

Download Pdf The Architecture of the Christian Holy Land

The Architecture of the Christian Holy Land by Kathryn Blair Moore Published on 2017-02-28 by Cambridge University Press In the absence of the bodies of Christ and Mary, architecture took on a special representational role during the Christian Middle Ages, marking out sites associated with the bodily presence of the dominant figures of the religion. Throughout this period, buildings were reinterpreted in relation to the mediating role of textual and pictorial representations that shaped the pilgrimage experience across expansive geographies. In this study, Kathryn Blair Moore challenges fundamental ideas within architectural history regarding the origins and significance of European recreations of buildings in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Nazareth. From these conceptual foundations, she traces and re-interprets the significance of the architecture of the Holy Land within changing religious and political contexts, from the First Crusade and the emergence of the Franciscan Custody of the H...
